Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept insurance for counseling (therapy) sessions?

Yes. I am a contracted provider with select insurance companies including Aetna, Cigna and Triwest/Tricare. I also accept Employee Assistance Program plans such as Aetna, Cigna and Anthem EAP, Ceridian and Military One Source. In addition I accept all Health Savings Account (HSA) Cards.

If you are part of another PPO plan you may also qualify for reimbursement for services rendered. Please contact your PPO health plan for reimbursement rates for “out of network” providers.

I am also able to offer free, short-term counseling to problem gamblers and/or affected family members through a contract with UCLA and the Office of Problem Gambling, State of California.

What is the cost of counseling and/or coaching if I am not using Insurance?

My rates are $130 for the initial consultation and $120 per session thereafter. Payment for services is due at the start of each session and rendered by check, cash, or credit/debit/HSA card.

I also work with Heather Erickson, LMFT, who offers sliding fee spots for those experiencing financial hardship.

What Is the Difference Between Coaching and Counseling?

Counseling
Counseling is helpful for working through life challenges and transitions such as a break-up, school, career and workplace issues, deployments and and grief; sometimes even joyful events such as becoming a parent can cause feelings of distress and overwhelm.

Counseling can also address couples relationship issues, parenting and family concerns; mood issues such as depression and anxiety; and problems such as emotional eating, compulsive shopping, and gambling addiction. For more information, please visit the Why Counseling? page.

The number of counseling sessions vary with each individual. Many problems resolve with short-term counseling (5 – 12 sessions); for more complex issues, longer treatment is usually indicated.

Coaching
Perhaps you’re coasting along in life but you’ve lost sight of your goals? Maybe you are not quite sure how to realize your life dreams? Coaching can help you brainstorm to generate new ideas, create action plans and learn how to effectively implement these plans for achieving your dreams. Coaching sessions are structured as 5 or 10 session packages. Please note that insurance companies do not cover the cost of coaching sessions, they only cover counseling (therapy) services.

How do I schedule an appointment or ask questions about beginning counseling and/or coaching sessions?

Please call my office at (619)549-3994. You may also send me an email using the form at the top of the page. Please be sure to leave your contact information (phone number and best times to call). I am happy to answer questions you may have prior to scheduling an appointment.

Do you offer any other services?

I offer workshops, trainings, project consultations, keynote/plenary talks, and webinars for community groups, schools, businesses and associations.
